Scotland - Licensing scheme > When do you need to apply for a licence?

Updated on

All new hosts (property owners) need a licence before they can accept bookings and welcome guests.

Please note:
Councils have up to 9 months to process applications for new hosts.

If you were already using your accommodation to provide short-term lets before the 1 October 2022, you must submit your licence applications before 1 October 2023.
As long as you have applied by the deadline, you can continue letting out your property while the council is processing your licence application.

Please note:
Councils have up to 12 months to process an application from an existing host.
The council can also apply to  a court for more time. They need to provide a good reason for requesting an extension.
