The cost for an SMS depends on the number of characters:

153 characters or less cost 1 credit
154 - 306 characters cost 2 credits
307 - 459 characters cost 3 credits

A SMS can not contain more than 459 characters. That is including numbers, spaces, dashes, hyphens or anything else on the keyboard.
